(AAAs, Adult Day Services, Memory Cafés, Senior Centers)
Enhancing Social-Emotional Wellbeing
with Age/Dementia Friendly Books and Employee Training
1
A Program Derived from Evidence-Based Research
Senior care often overlooks the preserved reading abilities of many long-term care residents.
The Community-Based Program taps into older adults’ lifelong connection to books, enriching their intellectual, emotional, and social wellbeing.
Our award-winning, evidence-based program provides:
-
A collection of age/dementia-friendly books
-
Employee/volunteer training
-
Supporting materials
Training equips employees with Montessori-based strategies to foster independence and reduce reliance on staff. Participants learn to:
-
Support self-directed reading groups
-
Enhance programs and events with themed books
-
Lead large, resident-driven activities with humor, music, skits, or devotionals
-
Create volunteer, student, & intergenerational programs centered around accessible books

Age Appropriate and Dementia Appropriate Books
Reading2Connect® books are thoughtfully designed for readability and ease of use, while maintaining the integrity of adult literature.
Modified text and rich illustrations allow most older adults to read and engage independently.
Topics range from popular interests—like pets, sports, and gardening—to culturally meaningful subjects such as Civil Rights, the Korean War, Judaism, and Japanese American history.
The books support shared heritage and belonging within the community.
Reading with peers promotes self-directed, meaningful social interaction with minimal staff support, sparking memory, self-expression, and connection.
3
Multiple Languages.
Multiple Formats.
Reading2Connect® books are available in English, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Italian, and come in three formats:
-
Durable print books on washable, tear-resistant paper
-
eBooks for use on devices or large screens
These formats help meet the varied needs of older adults with challenges in mobility, dexterity, vision, or hearing.
Staff report that even seemingly disengaged or distressed older adults often respond positively to the books.
NOTE: Reading2Connect-Certified employees report decreased stress and enhanced job satisfaction. Older adults demonstrate increased social engagement and positive emotions during and after Reading2Connect activities.
In addition, when an organization purchases our program, they retain lifetime access to our online training. This ensures that the extensive, positive impacts of Reading2Connect® remain alive and flourishing even with staff turnover.
