The Reading2Connect Long-Term Care Program
(Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living, Memory Care)

Enhancing Social-Emotional Wellbeing
with Age/Dementia Friendly Books and Employee Training

1

A Program Derived from Evidence-Based Research

The senior care field often underestimates residents' retained ability to read, particularly those living with dementia.

Reading2Connect is built on the proven premise that many individuals with dementia can still read functionally.

We deliver to Long-Term Care Communities:

  • Age/Dementia Friendly Books

  • Employee/Volunteer Training

  • Supporting Materials

Through our training, employees (e.g., Life Enrichment professionals) learn to apply Montessori principles to:

  • Support self-directed reading groups

  • Enhance programs and events with themed books

  • Lead large, resident-driven activities with humor, music, skits, or devotionals

  • Create volunteer, student, & intergenerational programs centered around accessible books

2

Age Appropriate and Dementia Appropriate Books

Reading2Connect books are designed for readability and ease of use while preserving the integrity of adult literature.

With modified text and rich illustrations, they empower most long-term care residents to read independently.

Our books cover a wide range of topics, from popular interests like pets and gardening, to culturally significant themes such as Civil Rights and Jewish Reflections, fostering representation and belonging.

By sharing these books, residents engage in self-directed socialization with minimal staff support.

Additionally, our books provide a compassionate, effective response to distress-related behaviors.

Multiple Languages.
Multiple Formats.

Reading2Connect Books are available in English, French, Spanish, Chinese, and Italian, in three formats:

  • Physical books: Washable, tear-resistant for durability and infection control.

  • eBooks: Viewable on devices or large screens.

  • Video Books: Playable on devices or TVs.

These formats help employees, families, and volunteers support residents with challenges in dexterity, mobility, vision, and hearing.

Employees report that many people who have been living with dementia for a long time often respond positively to our books and methodology.
